The Most Common Asked Question

Q: Coach, I am a female 173cm at 56kg. I exercise 5 days a week. A mixture of cardio, walking, hill walking, cross trainer and do a few classes, spin & circuit. I introduced pilates twice a week, around 6mths ago, and focused on the legs and buns which toned and decreased my thigh size. They now seem to be bulking up, which is not the result I am after. Are there any specific exercise(s) to avoid in making them larger?

A:Cardiovascular training ceases to work after 6 weeks of training. Period. It has been documented in the scientific research in exercise physiology as early as 1973, and yet the information has not reached mainstream fitness.
If it worked for longer than that, you would have made progress wouldn’t you?

Insanity has been defined as doing the same things over and over again, and expecting different results.

No wonder women slave away at cardio equipment with zero results.
First, you must determine how fat your legs really are. The best way to do that is to get your BioSignature done by one of our Practitioners. We have a Practitioner Database located on our website. There are many ways you can get leaner, but any protocol should be specifically designed for you. This is what a BioSignature assessment provides. Body fat accumulation on glutes and thighs is attributed to disruptions in the female endocrine system. For example, over the years we have been able to determine that fat accumulation on the quadriceps is more related to faulty endogenous hormonal pathways, while fat accumulation on the hamstrings is more related to environmental exogenous estrogen mimickers. Without precise measurement and ratios there is not much I can do to help you, however, one thing that is for sure is that the type of exercise you are doing is too low of an intensity to elicit the right hormonal output to burn body fat effectively. You need to get into interval training when you do your energy system training to get the proper training effect. Of course, the right dietary approach and the correct supplements will bring about much faster results.

For example, very few women know, or even medical doctors for that matter, that improper levels of the right elements in the gut flora can impact the amount of fat on your legs. Let me explain. One of the ways the body excretes the bad types of endogenous estrogens, and xeno-estrogens is through a process called glucuronidation. In this chemical process, there is binding of the given estrogen to glucuronic acid via a glycosidic bond. The human body also uses this detoxification process to excrete a large variety of molecules, including many pollutants and pharmaceuticals to name a few. The problem is that when you have bad gut flora there is an abundance of this enzyme called Beta-glucuronidase. This enzyme has the nasty habit of breaking the bond between the nasty estrogen and its escort the glucuronic acid, which means that the bad estrogen goes back into circulation. When the gut flora is optimal, the activity of the beta-glucuronidase diminishes.
Now, why do you get poor gut flora? Oral contraceptives use, frequent antibiotic use, intestinal pathogens, stress and a host of other factors can be blamed. The point being: bad gut flora can lead to fat legs.

Taking the right probiotic at the right time, can do wonders to help lean out the legs. And that is only one of the multiple strategies a BioSignature Practitioner has to help you lean out in the legs. Again, to locate a BioSignature Practitioner near you go to our Trainer Directory.

Best of luck to you,
Charles Poliquin

Re: The Most Common Asked Question

Great article! Sad however that when I try to explain that in my gym, which is a commercial one, people don't believe me, as everybody thinks the opposite. Charles, would you have the reference for the research showing that cardiovascular training ceases to work after 6 weeks of training? And also about the increase in intramuscular triglycerides in the thighs caused by spinning? I would like to shut their mouth once for all.

Re: The Most Common Asked Question

Trainer Directory.

Re: The Most Common Asked Question

Thank you for this exact information! This perception of doing hours of cardio as the only way to lose fat, increase capacity etc is really a mindset. As you so perfectly pointed out that there are studies detailing the facts behind this…so…the only thing left to change is the mindset.
In my experience this has been the toughest part, but once its conquered fantastic results are sure to follow. I tend to use a variety of mental strength skills, NLP and hypnosis to help my clients that have a similar “stuck” focus. Once they have a different perception on the situation and can see how the new info (your article for example) can be used to help with their progress they make quantum leaps in their progress.
Thanks again for this great information!

This is great info! Could you site one of your sources re: Cardio stops working after 6 weeks? (I'm assuming you mean it stops working in relation to dropping thigh size). I need ammo to back up this argument at my gym!

Re: The Most Common Asked Question

Notice how Charles commonly makes claims like "it has been documented in the scientific research since...." but fails to give so much as a single citation? That is because none of what he is talking about has anything to do with science.

Biosignature, were it even on their radar, would be considered a joke by the majority of excercise physiologists. It's ideas stand in total opposition to the current consensus of scientific research, to which Charles pretends some knowledge.

I expect the usual, "he is in the gym everyday and see's with his own eyes what works and what doesn't..." type of comments. But that is just ridiculous. And if that suprises you, try googling "anecdotal evidence"

Re: The Most Common Asked Question

Hey james,

if you goto www.pubmed.com and type in any of the skinfold sites "umbilical" "suprailliac" and it's respective hormone,(insulin, cortisol etc...) Im sure you will find more than enough evidence that biosig does make sense.

furthermore A friend of mine recently wrote an entire article about cardio and how it isn't effective. he has more sitings than anyone I know. read that one here:

arintraining.blogspot.com/2010/08/why-i-dont-like-steady-state-cardio.html

if anyone needs sitings here is where to find them.

Re: The Most Common Asked Question

Hi Joey

Thanks for your post, it was extremely entertaining!

I am all too aware of the literature concerning the claims of Biosignature Modulation, and no stranger to the pubmed database...

While fat deposition in particular regions of the body is certainly under the control of hormones – endogenous or otherwise – the extension of this to spot reduction through supplementation is absolutely not supported by research. Mind you, it is clearly an effective marketing tool to sell this method of sorts – for upwards of ten thousand USD from what I hear.

By the way Joey, I did check out your friend’s blog and have commented accordingly. If nothing else, it serves as a great example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

I had hoped I would get a coherent argument from someone here. However, it seems that no one is willing to do their homework. It’s no wonder Charles can post this stuff with such arrogance, completely unchallenged.

Re: The Most Common Asked Question

James is right, there's plenty of evidence of body fat sites being correlated with hormone problems, but where is the pubmed studies backing insulinoplex and ubermag for altering these hormone states. I'd not saying they don't, but where is the evidence beyond anecdotes?

Joey, that article isn't very good. The sprinter vs. marathoner picture classic, why not replace the picture of the marathon runner with every competitive BBer since the beginning of time that got lean using steady state cardio. The hunter-gatherer thing? If humans aren't meant to run long distances, and humans cannot out-sprint any animal, why do they have better endurance than virtually any other animal? Doesn't wearing out an animal by continual running sound like a plausible hunting method? Mike Boyle? Mike BOYLE? Are you going to remove back squats from the PICP curriculum too because mike boyle says so? That guy changes his mind more often than the weather changes.

Intervals have a place, steady state has a place, it's not an all-or-nothing thing, they both work, at the right time, for the right people. For the above client, I'd say she's probably under-eating and over-training, causing stress related water retention, or all the exercise is building up her appetitive, making her eat more and gain fat.

Re: The Most Common Asked Question

James/Brad

It's not as if supplement A causes effect B. It's about showing positive effects on how your body handles hormones. That information is then extrapolated to the skinfold sites. For example, fenugreek seed has been shown to have positive effects on insulin management. Extrapolate that and you can see improvements in the trunk skinfolds (as insulin has been linked to excessfat storage on the trunk skinfolds.) There is tons of information on the proposed benefits of using various vitamins, minerals & phytonutrients for improving health and performance. You just need to think about how you can apply the information, and be able to sift through the good reasearch studies vs. the junk.

Also, Charles didn't say cardio doesn't work. He says it 'ceases to work after 6 weeks of training'. Not the same as 'doesn't work'. I haven't personally trained a lot of bodybuilders, but those I have, seem to add their cardio only towards the end of training in prep for a show, not continuous throughout the year. My guess is that most of their fat burning comes from the hours spent on the weights and the incredible discipline for nutrition (the natural ones anyway).

Anyway,just my two cents

I really, really enjoyed this. The humor works brilliantly, and the animation is much better than I had imagined. The way you have “blended” (hehe) it all together makes this look like a solid, whole product, as good as any Pixar short. Probably better. B
