Seek Serenity and Decrease the Cortisol Signal

From Fight or Flight to Rest and Digest

We are designed with an amazing physiological response to danger known as the “fight or flight” response.  If you were being chased by a saber-tooth tiger, your body would respond with a hormonal flood of adrenalin and cortisol, focusing all of your energy systems and attention towards surviving the encounter.  For a short period of time, your body’s priorities completely change from things like healing wounds, clearing toxins and digesting your breakfast to the much more immediate needs of survival.  Just a few of the physiological reactions include: blood sugar skyrockets, heart rate and blood pressure increase, digestion slows, and even vision and hearing are altered.  Everyone knows the signs and symptoms of an overt adrenalin rush, but problems arise when we are continuously in a low-grade fight or flight response. 

As Robert Sapolsky pointed out in Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers, zebras are very good at stress management.  If a lion chases you, run for your life.  If you get away, relax and take a nap.  Zebras don’t worry about whether or not a lion will get them tomorrow.  They don’t stress out over their performance, beating themselves up because they could have gotten away faster or better.  They just forget about it and graze in the shade.  The point is that we could all learn a lot from zebras.

Instead of switching back to “rest and digest,” humans have convinced themselves that they’re always being chased by the saber-tooth tiger.  Being in a fight or flight response all the time wreaks havoc on our bodies, catabolizing muscle and disrupting various other systems like gastrointestinal, neurological and cardiovascular.  Sleep also becomes compromised and fat begins to accumulate around the middle.  The profile is of someone who is always go-go-go, a type A personality and is stressed and wired.  They may be nervous, anxious, easily distracted, and fidgety.  They complain of being irritable, easily agitated, and feeling out of control.  The more they stay in fight or flight mode, the more symptoms they will express.  Remember, fight or flight should be reserved for true physical danger and alarm, not for being late for work or answering Facebook postings.
